The Offshore Cougar

On a roll with the “ones that got away” apparently! This morning I got some long awaited close-up shots of a Sikorsky S-92 “Helibus” of Cougar Helicopters.

The S-92 is commonly seen of the Atlantic Coast of Canada shuttling men and supplies between offshore Oil Platforms. This is the same type of helicopter and Company involved in a very public and controversial accident on March 12, 2009.

Sikorsky received FAA certification for the S-92 in December 2002 and nearly 129 are currently in service around the World.

With a passenger capacity of nineteen, a number of safety enhancements like engine burst containment and advanced avionics it is a versatile and reliable platform in all weather.

It’s interesting to note that the two General Electric CT7-8A turbines are the same engines (different configuration obviously) as the Saab 340 which has CT7-9Bs.

Also, the S-92 is the civilian version of the CH-148 Cyclone which is the new Maritime Helicopter for the Canadian Forces.
